Lincoln's First Inaugural Address (1860)

1. Lincoln opens his speech by acknowledging the fact that the Southern states feared his leadership, due to the issue of slavery being at stake.
2. He states, "I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so."
3. He states that the Union is "unbroken", and he plans to make sure that it says that way.

• This reading helped me understand that politicians will say anything to get the votes of the majority.
• Lincoln's speech says one thing but he took a totally different route during his presidency.

Q) Why does Lincoln try to appease the south?
