Section 17
pgs118-122
Important ideas:
- The Constitution had no defined power of slavery, so it was a delicate issue.
- It was intentionally left out of the Constitution to heighten the chance of southern ratification.
- The issue of slavery split the U.S. into the Union and the Confederacy
- Even after slaves were free, Black Codes were installed to further hinder blacks as citizens.
Connections to Unit Question:
- Led to the 13th amendment, which completely abolished slavery in U.S. boundaries.
- The treating of slaves as property when against the initial values set forth in the Declaration of Independence, which the Constitution was founded on.
Lingering Question:
*Did the 13th amendment give immediate citizenship to blacks?
Section 17
pgs118-122
Important Ideas:
- Slavery was allowed by the founders to ensure southern support of the Constitution
- Congress attempted to implement a balance between free/ no free states
- Congress decided that new states should be free, but as collateral, the fugitive slave law was passed to keep slaves in non-free control if caught.
Connections to Question:
- Blacks who we considered property at first, were now being seen as people, which caused controversy with maintaining the ideals of the Declaration.
- Led to a definition of what it was considered to be an American citizen
Lingering Question:
- Why wasn't Lincoln stopped when over exceeding his power?
Good thoughts so far. I wonder what Lesson 17 says about Lincoln's use (or abuse) of executive power. In what ways did he violate his Constitutional duties and powers? Why did he do so? Was he justified?
Lesson 17 (pages 118-122)
Important Ideas:
-The Constitution issued no enumerated power over slavery within states.
-Instead of creating a slave state to balance California being made a free state, a stronger Fugitive Slave Law was put into effect in still existing slave states to return runaway slaves.
-Kansas-Nebraska Act: allowed people of a territory to determine if it would allow slavery or not.
Unit Connections:
-President Lincoln was willing to allow slavery to continue because he felt it was defending the Constitution, even though he was himself against slavery.
-President Lincoln allowed military trials for both sides, Confederates and members of the Union, after they were held under military arrest during the Civil War.
Lingering Question:
-If in reality President Lincoln was violating the Constitution, what evidence did he give for "defending" it?
